Kim Berkeley is a Barrister, Called to the Bar of England & Wales in 2005 and an Attorney-at-law with over 14 years PQE as an advisor and litigator appearing before the Magistrates Court, High Court and Court of Appeal and a Commission of Enquiry in Trinidad and Tobago.
She readily applies anti-money laundering and compliance expertise, along with opinion writing skills as Counsel to originate claims, draft applications and submissions and prepare for trials on property disputes, landlord and tenant, contract claims, personal injury, judicial review and extradition. As well as having served as an instructing attorney and Counsel in a variety of criminal matters.
She has been a member of Chambers led by Senior Counsels and has acted as their Junior in several high-profile matters, has had her own private practice, worked as an Associate in a large commercial law firm and held the posts of Director Legal Services both at the Ministry of Local Government and at the FIU. And for the latter successfully conducted the first AML deficiency proceedings before the High Court resulting in an injunctive order against the Defendant.
She is a Professional Member of the International Compliance Association UK where in 2014 she was awarded a Diploma in AML (Merit) accredited by the University of Manchester, UK.
She is also a trained CFATF Assessor for 4th Round Mutual Evaluations and acted as a Legal Reviewer for one such assessment of a member State in 2017/2018. She has advised in high level stakeholder meetings and in legislative reform committees on amendments to AML/CFT legislation.
She has also conducted training for law enforcement, supervised entities and State Prosecutors. She has also published articles on legal issues and on AML for a national newspaper and a Caribbean regional publication and was a contributing author in the recent launch of an e-book for the Association of Compliance Professionals of Trinidad and Tobago.
She is a dual national of the United Kingdom and the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago and is a graduate of Naparima Girls' High School, the University of the West Indies and BPP Law School, London, UK. She is a member of The Honourable Society of the Inner Temple UK, the Law Association of Trinidad and Tobago and the International Compliance Association (UK).
